FAQ
1. Why do we need these Enzymes and what are the benefits of taking them?
2. What is unique about this digestive enzyme supplement?
This is the only supplement in the market that contains 18 digestive enzymes in these specific amounts. Most digestive enzyme formulas contain only 5-8 enzymes, and in lower amounts. But this unique formulation is the most complete (full spectrum) available today.
Why is it important that a digestive enzyme supplement contains the full spectrum of necessary digestive enzymes? Because our body requires all these enzymes in order to break down and absorb the nutrients in the food we eat. Each food group we ingest can be broken down only by a specific enzyme. The major food groups are Proteins, Carbohydrates, and Fats. Proteins are broken down by proteases, carbohydrates are broken down by amylases, and fats are broken down by lipases. But there are many other enzymes that our body needs in order to digest specific nutrients that we ingest daily. For example, we need lactase to digest lactose—a disaccharide found in dairy products. It is estimated that 75% of adults worldwide have decreased lactase activity. They are lactose intolerant. As a result, lactose is not digested, and this causes bloating, diarrhea, and gas.
Our body needs enzymes to digest gluten—a protein present in wheat, barley, rye, and oat. Undigested gluten causes fatigue, gas, and abdominal pain to people who have gluten sensitivity. Dr. Matthew #1 Digestive Enzymes contain Aspergillopepsin and Dipeptidyl peptidase IV. Studies have proven that these two enzymes break down gluten. Research suggests that these two enzymes may soothe conditions that cause gluten intolerance.
We are all familiar with the usual gassy discomfort after eating beans and certain greens (broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower). This is because these foods contain glycolipids and glucoproteins that our stomach cannot easily digest. Dr. Matthew #1 Digestive enzymes contain alpha-Galactosidase, an enzyme that effectively breaks down these nutrients thereby reducing bloating, discomfort, and flatulence.
When we eat greens and vegetables, we take in large amounts of plant cells. Plant cells are difficult to digest because they are surrounded by a complex fibrous structure called “cell wall”. Dr. Matthew Digestive Enzymes contain Xylanase, Hemicellulase, Pectinase, and Cellulase that break down the hard-to-digest plant fibers that compose the cell wall. This action not only liberates important plant nutrients [1, 2, 3, 4] that were trapped within the plant walls and that our body can now easily absorb, it reduces the gas and intestinal discomfort that this undigested material causes.
The majority of digestive enzyme products currently in the market do not contain these important enzymes.
3. What enzymes does this product contain?
Dr. Matthew Digestive Enzymes contains the following 18 Enzymes.
1. Aspergillopepsin: Helps digest gluten.
2. Dipeptidyl-Peptidase 4: Breaks down gluten and casein.
3. Alpha Galactosidase: Helps digest beans, legumes and vegetables.
4. Amylase: Helps digest carbohydrates.
5. Beta Glucanase: Helps digest fiber and grains.
6. Bromelain: Helps digest proteins.
7. Cellulase; Helps digest plant wall and fiber.
8. Glucoamylase; Helps digest carbohydrates.
9. Hemicellulase: Helps digest carbohydrates in plant foods.
10. Invertase: Helps digest sucrose--a sugar commonly found in fruits and veggies.
11. Lactase Helps digest milk sugar in dairy products.
12. Lipase: Helps digest fats.
13. Acid Maltase: Helps digest carbohydrates from grains.
14. Neutral Bacterial Protease: Helps digest proteins.
15. Pectinase: Helps digest fruit and vegetables.
16. Phytase: Helps digest phytic acid in nuts and grains.
17. Protease 1 and 2: Breaks down proteins into peptides.
18. Xylanase: Helps digest plant wall fiber.
4. When should I take Dr. Matthew's Digestive Enzymes and how much?
Take 1 or 2 capsules right before your meal. There is no harm in taking it later, it just may not assist your digestion that much.
5. I tried these enzymes and didn’t see any effect on my digestion. What should I do?
If you don't see an effect on your digestion after taking enzymes, it's most likely because you need to take a higher dose. Try two capsules instead of one.
6. Should I take this product only before a meal or can I take it also before drinking a protein shake, eating a piece of cake, or any other food?
Take these enzymes to facilitate digestion of any food that upsets your digestion.
7. Can it help me digest gluten?
Yes. It contains two enzymes that specifically break down gluten: Aspergillopepsin and Dipeptidyl-Peptidase 4 (DPP-IV). In vitro studies have shown that DPP-IV efficiently degrades the immunodominant, proline-containing epitope of gliadin, the primary allergenic protein in gluten. Scientific evidence suggests that supplementation with DPP-IV can substantially improve the digestive and neurobehavioral symptoms associated with reactivity to gluten, casein, and other allergenic and neuroactive dietary proteins.
8. I have celiac disease. Can this supplement help me digest gluten completely?
No. While this supplement contains the enzymes Aspergillopepsin (ASP) and Dipeptidyl-Peptidase 4 (DPP-IV) which digest gluten, it does not necessarily completely digest the particular amino acid sequence on gluten that is responsible for celiac disease. If you have celiac disease you must avoid even trace amounts of gluten. So far, research has established that no digestive supplement can completely degrade the amino acid chain in gluten that causes celiac disease symptoms. However, clinical studies are ongoing to evaluate if “a fixed dose ratio combination of ASP and DPPIV can provide near-term relief for celiac patients suffering from inadvertent gluten exposure“. In addition to ASP and DPP-IV, Dr. Matthew #1 Digestive Enzymes contain other proteolytic enzymes, including papain, which have been clinically shown to be effective in some cases of gluten allergy. In at least one case study, a celiac patient who received oral papain began to tolerate some gluten and experienced better absorption and stool formation.
9. Is this chewable?
No. It’s an easy to swallow capsule.
10. If the pills are too big for me to swallow, can I open them in a glass of juice or water?
Yes, you can.
11. How long is the capsule?
It’s 0.75 inch long.
12. Is this product suitable for vegetarians?
Yes, it is. Some of the enzymes in this formulation are sourced from plants while others from naturally occurring microorganisms (like Aspergillus oryzae) that are completely harmless to humans. There are no animal-based enzymes in this product.
13. Is it suitable for Vegans?
Yes, it is. It is formulated to exclude animal products (dairy, fish)
14. I have a problem digesting dairy, wheat, and soy.
Yes, if you have food intolerance toward dairy, wheat or soy—that means, you have difficulty digesting these foods—this product was made for you. It has specific enzymes that effectively break down dairy, wheat and soy.
15. Will this product reduce the enzymes that my body produces? My herbal specialist has told me NOT to take digestive enzymes… guess I need to ask why she said that.
I have no idea why she’d say that…If this theory was true, then we shouldn’t eat raw foods because they’re full of enzymes and could possibly reduce the natural enzymes our body produces. But we know this is not how it works.
Sometimes theories are not based on science but on fear. What may happen when you take digestive enzymes is that your body will re-allocate resources to other places and allow your systems to function more efficiently.
16. Digestive enzymes contain amylase which breaks down starch. This speeds up the absorption of glucose. Won’t this accelerate the glycemic response making the body’s response to starches unhealthy?
No, studies have found the exact opposite. Following starch ingestion, people with high amylase activity had better glycemic homeostasis (lower blood glucose concentration) than people with low amylase activity. Therefore, taking digestive enzymes with amylase may lower your diabetic r
17. Can it help reduce indigestion and heartburn?
If you experience indigestion or heartburn, talk to your doctor because these might be symptoms of a serious medical problem like heart attack, gallbladder disease or ulcer. If you heartburn is caused by acid reflux (GERD), this product may help (see below).
18. Can it help GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)?
Yes and No. Acid reflux occurs when the valve that separates the stomach from the esophagus fails to remain closed when it should. As a result, the gastric content escapes the stomach and travels upwards causing irritation of the lining of the esophagus, and heartburn. Normally, after the food stays in the stomach for a while, it should move to the intestinal tract. In some people, the food stays in the stomach longer than it should. They have an abnormally long gastric transit time. This delayed stomach emptying increases the likelihood of a reflux event. Digestive enzymes can accelerate stomach emptying thereby lowering the possibility of backwash of acidic stomach contents towards the lower part of the esophagus. Dr. Leo Galland, MD, author at Huffington Post, and internationally recognized as a leader in integrated medicine, has found that digestive enzymes can help many people reduce acid reflux because they decrease distension of the stomach. The enzymes should be acid-resistant (like Dr Matthew Digestive Enzymes), so they work in the stomach itself (not in the small intestine), decreasing gastric transit time. On the flip side, if a person takes digestive enzymes and a reflux event occurs, digestive enzymes may further irritate the esophageal lining. Talk with your doctor before using digestive enzymes if you experience acid reflux. If you are on medication for acid reflux, keep taking what your doctor prescribed for you. However, keep in mind that there are also natural options that you can discuss with your doctor.
19. Why is Dr. Matthew #1 Digestive Enzymes Supplement better than Acid-Lowering drugs at Alleviating Heartburn?
The stomach produces hydrochloric acid to help digestion of proteins and also kill bacteria that enter the stomach. When the food stays in the stomach for too long, due to insufficient production of enzymes, the risk for esophageal reflux increases. It’s the acidity of the gastric content that causes heartburn in the esophagus. Acid-lowering drugs reduce the acidity but they don’t treat the root of the problem (poor enzyme production). Thus, the reflux often remains. The irony of treating people with GERD by making gastric juices less acidic is that food doesn’t digest as well, which can be a contributing factor to GERD. What’s worse, these drugs produce serious—and well documented in medical journals side effects—including increased risk for intestinal infection and increased risk of hip fractures. Decreasing the acidity of your stomach acid may provide short term relief, but it’s not a long term solution. Dr Matthew #1 Digestive Enzymes, on the other hand, reduce the risk for a reflux event because they facilitate and accelerate stomach emptying, that is, the digestion of otherwise undigested food in the stomach.
20. I am a healthy individual above 50. Why should I take digestive enzymes?
After about age 50, the pancreas produces only about half the amount of digestive enzymes that it did when you were younger. As a result, the food you eat is not broken down efficiently. It reaches the colon still undigested leading to noxious gas, bloating, cramping, and other digestive problems. This can lead to chronic malnutrition and stomach distress after most meals.Over-the-counter drugs like Alka-Seltzer® and Pepto-Bismol® can provide temporary relief, but they don’t treat the underlying cause of the problem. Dr. Matthew #1 digestive enzymes address the root of the problem: they provide your body with the digestive enzymes it needs to fully break down and assimilate the nutrients you ingest.
21. I am younger than 50 and as healthy as can be. Why should I take digestive enzymes?
Do you eat grains, nuts, legumes or cruciferous vegetables (i.e cabbage, broccoli)? What about foods that contain dairy or fiber? Do you occasionally eat a big meal, like the annual Thanksgiving overindulgence? Do you sometimes consume more than your fair share of high-fat foods, like avocados, whole eggs, olives, dark chocolate, cheese or beef—all of which contribute to what is known as slow stomach emptying? Do you occasionally indulge in junk food, like pizza and hamburgers or a meal loaded with carbs? In all these cases, one of the following two (or both) occurs:
– A significant part of the food you eat leaves your stomach undigested. Undigested food begins to rot and ferment in the intestines and colon, feeding bacteria which create flatulence (methane and hydrogen sulfide gases) as a byproduct.
– Your digestive system becomes overloaded with the breakdown of all these nutrients, particularly the excessive fat and carbs. An overly stressed digestive system results in poor nutrient absorption, sleep disruption, and fatigue.
Dr. Matthew #1 Digestive Enzymes promote a healthy digestion. They help you digest even those hard-to digest foods. They prevent intestinal gas and abdominal discomfort in all cases mentioned above. This unique enzyme blend promotes digestive health, optimizes nutrient absorption, and ultimately leads to better sleep, and more energy and vitality.
22. It contains hypromellose. I have read that it’s not good. Are these Enzymes safe?
The Internet is full of misinformation, especially in matters that relate to health, as many people like posting their views on subjects they are not experts at.
Dr. Matthew #1 Digestive Enzymes contain 19 natural enzymes that exist naturally in plants and our very own body. They are 100% free of GMO, colors and artificial flavors. They are also manufactured to exclude all common allergens.
The enzymes in Dr. Matthew’s formulation are enclosed in a vegetable capsule which is made of Hypromellose and Water.
Hypromellose is 100% safe. It’s a substance that is derived from plant cellulose. Hypromellose is approved by the FDA.
A number of scientific studies have confirmed the safety of Hypromellose. Here is one:

Capsules had a horrible smell. I always had a regular bowel movement with no problems, but when I started taking the capsules it stopped. I took the capsules before each meal 2 or 3 times a day for 3 days, and hadn't had a bowel movement in the meantime. After that I quit taking it. I watch how my body react to medicine and supplements whether I'm going to continue or not, and with this I'm not.
I have purchased various probiotics and digestive enzymes products over the last year, trying them out, but nothing has come close to Dr. Matthews in regards to quality of ingredients, packaging, company integrity, customer service, and obviously, if youre reading this because youre interested in these items the actual production results from using them. I am in my 30s and I have spent most of my entire life with either diarrhea at extreme times of eating certain foods, or loose stool. I have also had cramps, bloating, stomach pain, the instant urge to use the bathroom after eating, stomach rumblings, and sometimes when I eat things that affect my stomach in a negative way, I actually feel hungry more often and eat more. Well, I am SUPER HAPPY to report that I am producing solid, clean stools! I mean clean as they say that you should only have 2-3 wipes with healthy stool, and I am a 3 or 4 on the stool chart of 1-7, so I am right where I am supposed to be at for stool. To note, I take this probiotic 2x a day. The bottle says only 1 a day, but I emailed Dr. Matthew and 2 is fine if I choose to do so. These caplets for the probiotics are why they work so much better than all of the capsules I have tried. You can read about their reasoning from Dr. Matthews info, and they are legit! They last 6-8 hours, which is why I take two. I intermittent fast every day, not eating until lunch time, and at lunch I have 1 Dr. Matthews probiotics caplet, 1 Dr. Matthews Digestive Enzymes capsule, and 2 Dr. Matthews Turmeric Curcumin capsules. If the meal is an iffy one for my stomach, Ill take another digestive enzymes in the middle of the meal. I eat as late as about 9 or 10 pm, so the two probiotics cover this entire time range. I feel better, my stomach is flatter, and my stool has NEVER been better! You can see from some other reviewers who did their research, this company is on the up and up when it comes to their production practices. Some companies are a bit sketchy, and this is something you are consuming, daily! Also, their ingredients, yes! They actually list them unlike some competitors, and for someone like me who eats a low FoDMAP diet, this is so important to know whats in everything I eat, AND, they do not have ANY high FoDMAPs in their product! A lot of other probiotics have high FoDMAP ingredients. Whats also super-awesome to report is that I have been trying out a couple of trouble foods, and so far, so good! I had two egg burritos the other day, and I havent had flour tortillas in almost a year, and not only did my stomach not hurt, my stool was still good too! What!?! AMAZING! Oh, and how could I forget getting to have chocolate chip cookies for the first time in over a year and a half! They were SO GOOD! And NO stomach pain, no digestive issues, and my stool was perfect! YES! :D I do take a Dr. Matthews Digestive Enzymes with each meal, and two if it is a larger, potentially trouble meal, such as a second digestive enzymes before my second egg burrito. They have worked GREAT! The Dr. Matthews Digestive Enzymes are not only high quality in regards to the ingredients, but they have almost DOUBLE, if not more, of the actual amount youre getting for each different enzyme! Also, with the probiotics, I have a better, overall general sense of well-being as others have posted before regarding taking probiotics, and I have more energy, in a good way, not a caffeine/over-hyped way.
Now, Im posting this same review on all three products because I think they work well together overall as the Dr. Matthews Turmeric Curcumin supplements also help with digestive health along with other benefits. And some may think, Wow, that is expensive buying all of these caplets/capsules! Yes, its not the cheapest, but THIS, IS, YOUR, HEALTH, and you can pay for it right now where its not that expensive compared to other stuff in life and I can enjoy food, my life, not be in pain, etc, or I can save some money now, be in pain, not enjoy eating, have bathroom issues, and pay even more money when Im older because of all of the digestive issues I have had for years. Heres the thing folks, if my stool is off, some people say, So what? Stop looking, just flush. But, your stool is a representation of what occurred inside of you after you ate. If your stool is not in the healthy zone, that means your digestive system has an issue of some kind. With loose stool, or seeing a bunch of food chunks in your stool, this means that food items are not getting properly digested, which means certain nutrients are not actually getting to my body that needs them, and THAT is the dangerous endgame of not attending to this problem NOW!
Also, for saving money, yes, you could save and subscribe, but also, if you swipe to the last picture on Dr. Matthews products, youll see that if you buy more than one item at a time, you can get a really good discount! These are products that are way better than a lot of the other ones and are very above board on their...
I'm getting better results with this pill than other digestive enzymes I've tried. I think the reason is this pill has higher quantities of certain enzymes, and more different types of enzymes, than other enzyme pills.
For example, whereas some other enzyme pills have very small, therapeutically insignificant amounts of lactase (for processing lactose, in milk, cheese, etc) these have 1/3 as much lactase as a Lactaid pill (3000 ALU vs 9000 ALU in the Lactaid pill). Another example: Alpha-galactosidase, for processing gas-causing beans and other vegetables. This pill has 250 GALU, which is actually more than a Beano, which has 150 GALU.
In short, when you pop one of these pills, you are getting the equivalent of a third of a Lactaid and 2 beanos ... before you even start looking down the huge list of other things contained in these pills. So, in conclusion, this pill has a higher potency of digestion-helping enzymes, and also a very long list of digestion-helping enzymes. For ME, the results have been pretty spectacular so far; of course, it really varies a lot from person to person, when it comes to supplements, so you can't really go by someone else's experience that much.
Some people (I am one) have issues digesting garlic and onions. These two vegetables just wreak havoc on sensitive stomachs. I have found that all of the enzyme pills help somewhat with those challenging foods, but that this pill is particularly helpful. I can pretty much eat garlic and onions at will if I take one of these pills.
I plan to continue with this pill. Very happy with its positive impact on my digestion.
It says no more than 6 a day, but considering the high quantity of certain ingredients, I really think 1 or 2 a day would be more suitable. For instance, 6 a day would be the equivalent of taking 10 Beanos, which'd be ridiculous. 1 before dinner, and maybe 1 with another meal as needed, seems like the right amount to me. Of course it is not wise to over-consume any supplement, no matter how "harmless" it may seem, and that is why I recommend thinking in terms of one a day, or at the most 2.
The price is kinda high. It's a better pill than any of the competitors, so I guess it's worth it, but it'd be nice if it was cheaper. I got a single use 50 % off coupon after I bought a bottle, which brought the price down to a very attractive level for my next 3 bottles (around $12 each), and I'm kinda hoping there'll be other coupons of that nature in the future so I can continue with this supplement. In truth though, $12 isn't really necessary; $15-$16 would be a fair and acceptable price for long-term usage. Ergo, I think if there was a 35 % off for recurring purchases / regular customer type deal, that'd work out very well.
Two suggestions:
1. These pills, like all digestive enzyme pills, are not a magic solution to the problem of gluttony. You can easily overpower these pills with excessive eating; there is a limit to what they can handle. Take one right before you eat and then eat reasonably, and you'll get results.
2. I've found that *consistent* use of them is very important. You have to take them everyday, maybe just with dinner, or maybe with lunch and dinner, but whichever method you chose, do it everyday. Inconsistent, sporadic usage will not deliver the benefits.
SUGGESTION TO SELLER: Why not bump up that lactase from 3,000 to 9,000 ALU - the equivalent of one lactaid pill? I know for myself, and perhaps many others with lactose intolerance, that would really be a deal-closer as far as being a long-term customer of this product.
This is definitely one of the better digestive enzymes.
Enzymes are needed in every metabolic function in our body.
Even the minerals and vitamins required enzymes to work.
When we unprocessed, uncooked raw food,
the enzymes in the food will naturally help to break down the food and leaving little work for our stomach to break it.
However, when we eat processed or cooked food,
all the enzymes are dead and our body will need a lot of enzymes to finish the work.
Our pancreas (main enzyme producer) will have to work hard to produce the enzymes and even divert the enzymes needed for other bodily function.
Even wonder why we feel so sleepy,
sluggish and having energy crash after a heavy processed or cooked meal,
this is the reason why! You will notice that this is not same when you eat a lot of raw fruits and vegetables instead.
When your body has to divert the enzymes for production for food,
it actually compromises your physical and mental energy,
immune system, stamina and etc! Taking digestive enzymes helps to make your food nutrients bioavailable for absorption,
reduce food allergies, reduce stomach discomfort, loose stools, bloating etc and takes stress off your pancreas.
It is believed that we can only produce a limited amount of enzymes in our life and you certainly dont want to exhaust it in on your food. The less you use,
the healthier, longer your life. Studies have shown that almost everyone over 50 has enlarged pancreas due to overstressed! For those who dont know about enzymes products
, it is considered a medium strength digestive blend. Basically,
it contains 2x times a normal digestive blend will contain. It also contains some (not all) specialised enzymes (other than just protease,
lipase, amylase) to digest the more common food. The caps are
not too big and easy to swallow.
This product also contains multiple strains of protease, lipase, cellulase and amylase
. This is because different enzymes function between pH value range.
It is to ensure that you can enjoy food across different digestive organs (eg stomach is acidic, small intestine is mild alkaline).
The best way to take this is to take it 5 min before eating to allow the capsules to dissolve first or uncap and take it just before eating.
Generally, I take 1 for a normal meal, 2 when I overeat
I have been a vegetarian all my life and mostly vegan for the past several years. I am probably what you would call a workaholic while being very conscious of what I eat to maintain performance over the long run. While I was careful with my diet, the balance was skewed and due to several reasons it led to my system not being to handle a lot of the food that I was used to. This happened over a relatively short duration of 2 to 3 months leading to a lot of distress.
I have been maintaining a food log for over three months to figure out what food I can handle and what I cannot. I got down to the very basic food that regulated my system but unfortunately led to very low energy levels. I knew that I cannot keep this up over the long run and after some thorough research on Amazon, I elected to buy Dr. Matthew's Digestive Enzymes (when the number of reviews for this product was less than 30. Its around 280+ now).
I have been using the digestive enzymes for two and a half weeks now while recording my system's response and comparing it with how I was over the past few months. The digestive enzymes work as advertised. I started off with one capsule before dinner for three days and now use it twice daily - one capsule before lunch and one before dinner. The difference in my body after taking the enzymes has been remarkable. After a couple of days, I could feel a great sense of calm. This was probably due to my body not fighting against the food that I had ingested. It was a wonderful feeling that I wanted to maintain forever. I had forgotten how it felt to have a meal, be satisfied and not have to prepare for a battle for the next few hours and especially the next day. I have reintroduced some of the food that I used to have several months ago and my body has been responding very well. My overall health has been trending in the right direction and I am planning to continue the twice daily intake of the digestive enzymes till I am back to normal.
Amazon has a lot of highly rated products making it very difficult to separate the 5 star products from 3 star products. This is definitely a 5 star product. It exceeded my expectations. YMMV.
In the long run, I would like to wean myself away from supplements and rely on natural food. Thats a different topic and probably not what Dr. Matthew would like to hear more about.
